My mom is hard of hearing and it gets annoying when I have to repeat myself all the time. Help ?
CurlyQMaex3 asked:
I love my mom very much, but she’s hard of hearing and I always have to yell or repeat myself so many times and she wont do anything to help her. Her hearing aids broke but she won’t get new ones. Any suggestions for her to improve her hearing?

New hearing aids.

Either get her hearing aids fixed / replaced or
Speak clearly, loudly and only after you get her attention and while you’re looking AT her so she can see you.

Well I’m sorry but the only way you can improve her hearing is by getting her new hearing aids. Unless if you’re God, that is.

Would one of these help? I have no idea how well they work but they certainly are cheap enough.
(Oops, that one got terrible reviews but people seemed to like this one better)

check ears regularly for wax plugs. Treat for allergies and water-build up in ears. i don’t blame her on the aids…frankly ,they are really expensive.rarely covered by insurance, and need frequent adjustments. My dad hates his; it takes a lot of visits to the distant doc to keep them tuned-up. he pays thousands of dollars for his, and the batteries ain’t cheap either. They don’t work in all circumstances on top of it. it can be a safety issue so you might want to explore that with your mom. Ok…I just spoke with my dad and he amended my information here. He said that the first aid he got was bad. He changed brands and it took a couple of trips to get it adjusted and then it works great. He changes batteries once a week for about 50 cents. His cost 3000. EACH, but he says they work great. His neighbor just paid $3500. EACH and got a brand that , if you wear a device around your neck, recieves the TV audio right into the hearing aid, in addition to being a regular hearing aid. This might really appeal to your mom. Don’t know what to say about the cost..isn’t that rediculious??? My dad says then the aids will last about 5 years…a little less if you live in an area with high humidity….and it seems to be worth it to go high-end on the aids.

My mother also has hearing problems and what has helped us is making sure she is looking at us when we talk. We also got her a special phone that rings REAL loud and is VERY loud in volume so she can hear. You can get these special things at Council for the Deaf. Also we got her an alarm clock that when it goes off it flashes her light lamp instead of playing a radio. I would look into those things, they really help.

The answer about check wax and for ear infections for somebody who has a hearing loss due to age is just ridiculous… this type of hearing loss usually is high frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Sensorineural means that it occurs in the inner ear near the nerve and is permanent- it cannot be treated by medicine or medical procedure. Straight amplifiers such at the As Seen On TV “loud and clear” turn everything up and everything down which turns up the low pitches too much and still doesn’t give you enough of the high pitches. Hearing aids are prescription that fit your hearing loss pitch by pitch to give you more loudness in the frequencies that you need it- that’s why the high end ones work better- they split your hearing loss up into more channels or more different pieces. Hearing aids are expensive because they are computers in your ears that make more adjustments per second than your desktop computer. People don’t keep their hearing aids in the drawer anymore unless they are old school programmable or they don’t have a very good person programming them. And for something that helps you to hear every single day… the money is worth it! Good luck.

You could set a basic sign-language with her.
