How hard is it for a hearing person to fake deafness?

deafness
Marcia asked:

I met this really sweet guy who is 27 and says that he has been deaf since age 15. He can read lips and his speech is just fine, but delayed. My mom made me paranoid and says that he could be faking being deaf just to get sympathy and whatever else he can. Is there a way I can secretly test her theory?

When he’s not looking at you, try talking to him, or say his name, ect.
Say things that might make him look if he can hear you.
I’m sure he’s not faking though.

Why on earth would your mom think that? Drop a book when you stand behind him.. not a huge on that he can “sense” but something that will make enough noise to make someone turn at the sound… if he turns immediately - he’s not deaf. Just make sure he couldn’t feel the vibration or anything.

Who would fake that? Come on now.
