Honestly, I often see it as an advantage.

There is a great disadvantage in being deaf and therefore unable to communicate with other people.
Hearing aid technology, cochlear implants, speech therapies, and other new treatments have made a difference for some people but for those born without hearing , life can be very frightening indeed.
Other people seem to treat the deaf as being unintelligent, when in fact, the opposite is often true.
