Is it possible to suffer almost total deafness overnight?

deafness
Sophie asked:

A friend, who has quite good hearing in one ear and partial deafness in the other says he woke this morning to almost total deafness. Nothing can be heard out of one ear and hearing from the ‘good’ ear has also diminished. He said it wasn’t gradual but came on all of a sudden and it feels like the sensation you sometimes experience on an airplane when your ears are blocked. He has tried holding his nose and swallowing, ******* sweets and chewing gum and then to make matters worse when he called the doctor’s office this evening, they can’t see him until Friday! I have no idea what to suggest. He is quite scared as it came on so suddenly

It’ll just be ear wax if it’s that sudden. Tell him to drip olive oil into his ears twice a day until he goes to the docs and they will be able to syringe them there and then. If he doesn’t do that he will have to make a second appointment at a later date as they will refuse to flush out unsoftened wax!!! Sounds disgusting but true and it’s a lovely experience, warm and moist and you get your hearing back in an instant.

Sounds very similar to my wife’s condition, though not quite as bad. He should be talking to an Audiologist.
As far as the Missus is concerned, her hearing can go if she’s stressed, or her blood pressure goes up. Sometimes it just get worse for no reason. In some circumstances a short course of anti depressants does the trick, not because she’s depressed, but it appears to ease the physiological side of things. Don’t, whatever you do, give your friend anti depressants; get him to an Audiologist.

The same thing happened to me
it was put down to sinusis choked
I had to watch telly (not that I am a fan of tv )
with subtitles on, I just kept blowing my nose
until one day my ears popped and I could
hear again, not a nice experience but it should
be ok, it took about 10 days for mine to clear..

Although frustrating it is not a matter of life or death so tell your friend not to worry and just hang out for the appointment. If in the meantime he develops pain and/or discharge from the ear he should get an emergency appointment.
