Here in Australia - they wait until the baby is asleep and then they put ear **** thingys on the baby and send tiny sounds through one ear at a time. They have thingy’s (sorry, not sure on the technical jargon) on the baby’s head too, just stuck on, and they test to see if the brain waves spike when the sounds are played.
That’s my understanding of what they said to me anyway!
