My 3yr old son is deaf, right now hearing aids aren’t really doing much. Should I do cochlear implants?
saije asked:
I don’t know what I should do, I don’t want to get the implants and cut any chance of my boy to hear, as a mom I want to do everything I can, but also as his mom, I don’t want to do what I want, just because I want him to be “normal” and ruin he’s chances in hearing, later in life.

I would talk with his ENT who of course knows more about the situation.
My cousin has cochlear implants and it’s amazing how much they have helped her.

Yes! These are vital years for him for learning and interacting with people! He’s got to be able to hear so he can talk and learn. Alternately, you can expose him to members of the deaf community so they can socialize him using sign language, and you have to learn sign language so you can talk to him in a way that’s easy for him to understand and with which you can teach him all the things a parent should teach a child. One way or the other (hearing community via cochlear implant, or deaf community via sign language), he needs to be exposed to normal human socialization during this crucial period of brain development and language learning!

what do you mean ruin his chances of hearing later in life? cochlear implants help you hear. my boy is almost 4, he was born deaf. hearing aids did nothing at all either, we chose to implant him. he has had the cochlear implant for 8 months. the first 6 months he didnt show any improvemnt and i kind of regretted it. but the last 2 months he has really took off. he has a 6 word vocab, he knows when the phone rings and answers it “hello”, says pop, uh-oh, up up up up, and mama. and this is just the beginning. he recognizes all 7 of the ling sounds which are the basic sounds of the english language, and if you can hear those you can hear any word in the english language. he recognizes our bird chirping, dog barking, the vacuum. and he wasnt suppose to be this advanced till he was a yr old. right now the sky is the limit for him. he will eventually talk like a regular hearing kid. i can go on and on and on. you catch my drift. the cochlear implant is truely a miracle but it is also hard work. do whats in your heart, i know i dont regret it and neither does my son. he always asks for his implant as soon as he wakes up and enjoys hearing. you will get alot of negative comments towards it cause the deaf movement is against the cochlear implants, which isnt my battle so i dont bother with it. i just know my son loves to hear and i am real proud of him everytime he says a new word or recognizes a new sound
