Despite what all the private companies try to tell you, hearing aids are basically all the same. The NHS one is as good as any other.
If you were ever tempted to look elswhere then buy off the Internet because prices in other countries care about a qurater of what we pay here

My fella just recently got upgraded to a digital and he says it’s brilliant. He has been for a measurement for a second one now (both on the NHS) . Some health authorities only give one free but Manchester will give two and it does (so they say) allow you to tell where the sound is coming from. If your hubby has only got one check it out. Hope this helps.

my son aged 6 has them supplied by the nhs for the last 4 years if your husband still has problems hearing with these he could ask the nhs for a radio aid to which is a small device that attaches to the back of each hearing aid and is hardly noticeable the other part is designed to look like a mp3 player and would hang around your neck not your husbands and this transmits every thing to your husbands hearing aids this device can also be conected to tv/ computers etc my son has hadone the last month and what a difference these are supplied by a company called phonack

Yes I have a digital aid.Mine is a Phonak supero and I had mine on the NHS also. The NHS subcontracted the supply and fitting to a private hearing aid centre so as to reduce the considerable waiting lists for digital aids.Once fitted and tested the centre passed you back to the local hospital for future maintenance and replacement batteries.I recently had occasion to visit my local Boots vision centre where I was having an eye test and ordering new glasses. There was also a hearing department attached and while waiting for my eye test I had a word with the resident audiologist. He looked at my hearing aid and commented that he sometimes supplied the same model, and that it was quite a powerful one.If supplied from Him it would cost in the region of £500.He also said that the very expensive aids,up to £2000 ,did not work or enable you to hear any better, they just fitted right inside the ear to be virtually unnoticeable. The extra £1500 or so spent was only for vanity.I had thought, possibly like yourself, of getting a hearingaid privately but will not bother now. As I said I am completely happy with the one I have.
