My 6 yr old son is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids. Any parents of hearing impaired children on here?
guatemama asked:
My son has been hearing impaired since birth….although the doctors didn’t discover it until he was 3….I had to insist on a hearing exam because I knew he wasn’t hearing normally. Anyway, I was just wondering if there were any other parents out there that have hearing impaired children? My son wears his hearing aids all day, usually, and even forgets to take them out when he goes swimming or takes a bath (which has caused me anxiety on more than one occasion!) How have your experiences been?
Thanks for the posts so far. My son knows a few signs so that if we are at a distance and he can’t hear us he can still know what we are wanting him to do. He doesn’t “speak” in ASL since his speech is actually very good. I don’t know how! He actually is quite a good lip reader….which is how I knew something was wrong with his hearing when he was a baby, he watched my lips not my eyes. His audiologist says that he is VERY hearing impaired. Even WITH his hearing aids, his hearing is below normal. He hears low sounds well. But high pitches are non-existent to him. I remember the very first day he got his hearing aids when he was 3. We came home and the windows were open. He was sitting on the living room floor playing hotwheels and suddenly looked up at me and said “what’s that sound?”. It took me several guesses to figure out he was hearing the BUGS outside in the bushes for the very first time. Raising him has brought an awareness to my life that I otherwise never had.

My co-worker is hearing impared with hearing aids and says not to worry, your child will adjust to wearing the hearing aids and taking them out as a matter of course.

My cousin is hard of hearing and can’t hear certain pitches…my Aunt and Uncle don’t make her wear her hearing aids and it drives me crazy!! She is out of control in more than one way…her hearing problems are not her only problems…
It sounds like you are much better parents and care a lot more about your sons best interest…good for you!

i was wondering if you have started sign laung? my son can hear but he know sign. when i was preg i was around a guy he is 22 now but he is deaf, has downs and several other health probs like being on oxgen 24/7…..ect and i love to be able to comunicate with him… can you son hear at all.. or just pitches? James * the guy i’m talking about* can hear one or two pitches with his hearing aids but that is about it, and he relize on sign even tho he does not every sign but knows enough to be able to talk to his nurses. my son is 3 and he knows about 50 differents signs and it is awsome to watch him sign to james. it is another laung. and he will always be able to use it.. i just thought i would but my 2 cents in…

Don’t worrry about it. Your son will adapt as he grows up.
Contact both your hospitals and your school districts to locate other families with hearing and speech impaired difficulties. You may leave your contact info with some if they express privacy concerns. Let hospital staff and school members, etc. pass on your contact email or tel. number to appropriate families.
Do you know ASL- American Sign Language? You may think he doesn’t need it, and you may be right, but every little thing we do to communicate clearly helps the child’s intellectual and emotional growth. Learn ASL or BSL together, it is fun and it’s a skill he can take to the bank when he grows older.

Here in SW Florida there is an organization called the Deaf Service Center. They have a network of parents and deaf and hearing impaired individuals and plan ASL training courses and social functions (such as a monthly Silent Dinner where the hard of hearing and friends and family get together to socialize and practice signing all together). You may want to check in your area to see if there is such and organization or help to plan such an organization if there isn’t one in place. The DSC also is the distribution center for amplified and TDD telephones for this part of Florida.
Good luck!
