Not sure about america, in germany you will have part being paid by the health insurance and part by the patient. The costs vary greatly with the performance of the hearing aids.
Hearing aids that are generations behind (i.e. tech level from 10 years or more before) might be cheap (probably less than 1.000 Euros per 2 devices, maybe even fully covered by your health insurance), whereas digital hearing aids of the newest generation (that don´t even have problems in crowded pubs with lots of background noise) might be more than 10.000 Euro per device.

You should be able to find out what Medicare covers by going to this website.

Medicare

I know that Medicare won’t cover routine hearing exams or hearing aids but they will cover diagnostic hearing exams in some cases.

Hey there.

I am mild deaf in both of my ears, and they recommend me to get 2 behind the ear hearing aids to know where certain sounds are coming from. There’s no such place to get used hearing aids since it needs to be optimized for YOUR hearing loss levels. You may want to talk to a Audiologist specialist about prices and certain advantages. If you live in England, you can get them free off the NHS.

Good luck!

Digital hearing aids are the most expensive.
Older generation aids are much more reasonable.
Do not see just a hearing aid dealer; get a complete work-up by an audiologist. Audiologists are the real pros who determine the type of hearing loss, the extent of it, and the right hearing aid for your type of loss. He/she can advise you of what’s covered by Medicare. Call around.
If you are a veteran, try the VA.

I’m deaf and I have been wearing hearing aids all my life. My most recent pair, which I got a year ago, cost me about $4000. Of course, there are less expensive ones and even more expensive ones. Mine are digital and are custom fit. I have extremely narrow ear canals so finding hearings for me is a chore. My current ones are Seimens and I recommend them. I think this is the 5th pair of Seimens aids I’ve had in my life.

Choosing a hearing aid depends on the type of hearing loss you have and the degree of it. Consult an audiologist for a hearing test and advice on choosing a hearing aid. Good luck.

EMT

I have about 15% hearing so I can’t and don’t rely on it. Hearing aids help but I depend mostly on lip reading.
