Can bluetooth headsets act as hearing aids?
steve h asked:
All they would need was a sensitive microphone to amplify the sound into the ear. Actually they have one of them too…
Advice on the best software

A hearing aid is an electronic device specifically programmed for a hearing loss. The amount of amplification will vary frequency by frequency based on the hearing loss at each pitch. Hearing aids are much more sophisticated devices than bluetooth headset as they not only are specifically programmed for a hearing loss but also employ technology such as noise reduction, directional microphones, feedback management, etc.
Hearing aids are covered under FDA regulation and are fit by trained professionals to ensure accurate amplification is prescribed to the person with hearing loss which not only improves satisfaction but ensure safety (preventing damage from too much amplification).
For persons with hearing loss, many of the newest digital hearing aids also can be used as a Bluetooth device for cell phone use.
Bluetooth headsets usually do have the ability to turn the volume up and there are some out there touting to be personal amplifiers for use beyond the phone. Proper expectations should be considered however because Bluetooth headsets are very limited to what they can provide to persons with hearing loss. They can’t be programmed for hearing losses and do not have other abilities that hearing aids do.
