Question for parents about hearing aids please?

hearing aids
Metal Nettle asked:

Hiya, question please for parents who have a child that wears a hearing aid - or young people who have aids but can not/could not put them in themselves please.

I took my son to school today for the first time with his new hearing aid. I told his teacher that for right now, well just let him go and see how he feels, but tomorrow, if she can make time, I will show her how to put it in if it comes out (probably wont, but anyway).

Now I was surprised that she ho-hummed a bit about whether they were allowed to put it in for him or if we’d have to come back up and do it.

Have any of you got a school that will help or do you have to go back if there’s a problem?

It’s not huge for us, one of us will be around if they need us, but it seemed silly that there is a possibility they won’t help a six year old if he needs it. I assume that they would help him get a shoe on if it came off and he couldn’t do it, and that would involve touching him to some degree, I also assume that they have contact with him in gym class if they need to help him do something…?

Do you think it will be a problem for them?
Oh we won’t need to discuss it with the school, if they can’t they can’t, and we will. I was wondering if any parents had encountered this and how it worked out, just so I had an idea how this would go tomorrow.

(There is no school nurse, and all kids have an IEP at this school, it’s a normal mainstream school, they just have a policy that all kids get an IEP so everyone is equally catered for. )

I think the teacher is worried about being liable if something goes wrong. She’s probably worried that she might insert it incorrectly, cause him problems with his ears or damage his hearing aids. She’s probably hesitant, because she doesn’t want herself or the school to be held responsible if something goes wrong.

I’m not sure about the policy of schools in your area, but I suggest you discuss this better with the teacher or other school staff.

If necessary (if you are in the US) call for an IEP to address this. There are activities that only designated people are allowed to do when a child needs medical assistance, but I have never heard that a teacher couldn’t help a child put their hearing aids back in.

in teh US_

he shoudl havea 504 plan to deal with this

it may be as simple as having the school nurse do it–or having teh teacher approved by teh principal to do it

if he only needs help with tehheariong aids–he does NOT need an IEP
