Is there free hearing devices for the hearing impaired? And which state?

hearing aids
ADMIRAL 0125 asked:

I’m almost deaf. I use two hearing aids. My husband is hard of hearing. He will not consider any devices b/c we can’t afford luxury items. Is there an organization who helps people with hearing impairments? We live in No. California.

Advice on the best software

I don’t know about CA, but try United Way, Easter Seals, and if you have one, Knights of Columbus. If you are near a major hospital, call an ENT and maybe they can refer you to an organization who will help.

The Starkey Foundation can provide free or extremely low cost hearing aids.

Miracle Ear has a program for children but might also have some adult help.

Also, check with the Sertoma Club or Lion’s Club in your area.

Also, ask you doctor for help with this. Hearing aids are not considered luxury items and may be covered by insurance.

There is a group called Hope for Hearing in California that has a used hearing aid bank.

Have you also tried getting in touch with Medicare? They have programs for people with disabilities and I think this qualifies (you don’t only have to be 65 and up)! There are a bunch of government programs you can look into as well as your local Lions Club too…..these cost saving benefits are explained in simple terms in the book “Healthcare for Less” by Michelle Katz…I bought the book at my local Barnes and Noble after hearing her speak about saving money in terms of choosing a physician, the right insurance and tax write-offs…the book has so many great suggestions that I did not even know about, and I am in the medical field!!! If it is easier, you can also order the book for about $10 on. I hope that helps.

I too live in No. Calif and am deaf. Contact the Accessibility Resource with AT&T (voice) 1-800-772-3140 and (TTY) 1-800-651-5111 for a free TTY, and I believe they also give free light flashers for the phone. Just ask what free products they give for the hearing imparied as I’m sure I’m not up to date.

I don’t know if you know, but there are many free online relay services such as A TTY is not needed if you only make relay calls and don’t regularly communicate to other deaf people on TTY. I don’t use the TTY, I **** it. I’d rather use instant messaging.

If you rent a place, the landlord is responsible for providing you with a flashing fire alarm. I rent a house and my landlord bought the special fire alarm, carbon monoxide detector and flashing doorbell for me. I just gave her the catalog, and she ordered it.

I recommend asking your question at a deaf forum where I’m sure you can get much better and more specific answers from deaf people.
